Bhanubhai and Madhuben Patel, a state-of-the-art Cardiac Centre of Shree Krishna Hospital Karamsad has been a pioneer in cardiac care in the State, and this milestone is indeed a proud moment for the hospital. A dedicated and qualified team of highly experienced cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons provide care that is at the cutting edge of medical science and at par with internationally-recognized standards.
The centre has treated thousands of patients across Gujarat, and surrounding states, and more than a hundred international patients from Iraq, Iran, Kenya, South Africa etc. in the last 15 years.
A 56-year-old, Jamal Mutashar Zaar Imari from Iraq is a taxi driver. He was diagnosed with severe Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). He had multiple blockages in his arteries. He came to Shree Krishna Hospital for treatment with the reference of one of his countrymen who had taken treatment earlier at this centre.
Logistics were worked out rapidly by Aslambhai, translator of the International Department of Shree Krishna Hospital, which enabled the patient to come to the Cardiac Centre from Iraq. The Cardiac Centre team evaluated his case and a treatment plan was formulated.
Dr. Manish Tiwari, Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon, said that the patient was diagnosed with multiple blockages. Considering the long-term benefit, he performed LIMA RIMA Y Grafts surgery, the most effective method of Total Arterial Grafting. The technique was completely safe & effective for patients with multiple blockages. The Cardiac Anesthesiologists Dr. Gurpreet Panesar, Dr. Karthik Dhami and Dr. Kunal Soni played a crucial role in the surgical process.
After successful surgery, the patient was transferred to a cardiac ICU. The intensivist, nursing and paramedical staff provided compassionate care, which resulted in a smooth recovery. The patient was now normal and could fly back home within a week of discharge.
He added "The bilateral Internal Mammary Arteries i.e. Left Internal Mammary Artery (LIMA) and Right Internal Mammary Artery (RIMA) conduits were usually used for Total Arterial Grafting in CABG. LIMA RIMA Y CABG procedure was done on a beating heart (off-pump). Previously the veins from the legs were used as a conduit for bypass surgery but the longevity of leg veins was not more than 7 to 10 years. They would slowly degenerate as veins from the legs were unable to tolerate the high pressure present inside a human coronary circulation. Hence, Internal Mammary Arteries i.e. LIMA and RIMA were used as a conduit for bypass surgery".
According to the patient, “We are very happy with the competence of the doctor and the care and hospitality of the nursing staff. The facility of a translator here helped solve all the communication problems and the process has been amicable and smooth.

Diamond crown with 360 degree high speed rotation from 80000 to 120000 rpm to cut severe calcification in arteries, the world -class technique to treat coronary artery disease now at cardiac center of Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad
Widely used in the USA for the last 10 years, this technique is launched in India for the last four months, and our Centre is the first to introduce this in the Anand Kheda region.
The burden of heart disease on society is on rise, and the extent of its spread across genders, age bars, and geographical boundaries, can easily be compared with a pandemic. Experts in the field are constantly on their toes looking for new techniques and mediums to mitigate the damage in the heart due to the increased calcification in the arteries. Diamond back 360 orbital atherectomy is one of the newest technique with promising results in patients whose life is at threat due to increased blockage. Shree Krishna Hospital recently utilized this technique to successfully remove the blockage from a patient who had a severe blockage.
A 71 -year old male with hypertension, complained of worsening shortness of breath for last few weeks. To understand the cause, he was investigated with routine blood tests and echocardiogram which showed normal reports. This was followed by a stress exercise TMT test and he was unable to complete the first stage due to breathing difficulty. After this, he was taken to our Cath lab to perform coronary angiogram to assess for angina equivalent which showed 70 % calcified disease in main artery; pressure study iFR was done to confirm restriction of blood supply to heart muscle and necessity of treating blockage ; Intravascular ultrasound imaging catheter demonstrated 3 D visualisation of the severity and extent of heavy calcium inside the heart artery. These latest technology are available round the clock with our new advanced Philips cath lab machine.
Patient’s condition and treatment options were discussed with his relatives. And with their consent it was decided to use the new technique involving diamond crown to break down the calcification in the arteries before implanting the stent.
This was a critical and complex intervention. But with our expertise and determination to offer the best option of care to the patient, our team of interventional cardiologists performed this technically advanced and innovative procedure successfully. Such type of procedure is performed first time in the entire Kheda and Anand regions, and only the fourth procedure in the Gujarat state.
Dr. Kushal Pujara, our Interventional Cardiologist on this latest triumph of our cardiac centre opines “ Use of Diamond back 360 orbital atherectomy is an innovative and safe method to churn out solidifies excessive calcification. This procedure before implanting a stent ensures a better & sustainable long term outcome in our patients, and the complications are also relatively lesser. We have all latest world class technologies (eg IVL shock balloon , Rota Pro , Orbital diamond atherectomy etc.) and it’s expertise are available at our cardiac center to deal with enemy of calcium inside heart arteries and hence open heart bypass surgery can be avoided in certain patients”
This new technique when performed with clinical finesse promises an excellent outcome to the patients, and the quality of life after the intervention is much better as compared to any other modality of treatment.

The doctors at the Cardiac Centre (The Healing Tree Services) of Shree Krishna Hospital, the teaching hospital of Bhaikaka University, Karamsad, removed the heart blockage with the ROTAPRO TRIPSY technique.
Newer advanced technology in interventional cardiology is a blessing for cardiologists to fight against the monster of calcium for the best outcome in complex, high-risk indicated patients.
The cardiac team of Bhanubhai and Madhuben Patel Cardiac Centre (The Healing Tree Services) of Shree Krishna Hospital, the teaching hospital of Bhaikaka University, Karamsad, gave a new lease of life to an 87-year-old cardiac patient using ROTAPRO TRIPSY.
"The cardiac centre used the RotaPro system (with extra safety features for the patient and user-friendly) successfully first time in Anand and Kheda district to remove the heavy calcifications in the blood vessel considering the age of the patient. The procedure was done along with an intravascular lithotripsy shock balloon (ROTA PRO TRIPSY) and intracoronary 3D imaging IVUS (Intra Vascular Ultrasound) guidance. It involves navigating a catheter fitted with a rotablator — a device to drill calcium inside the heart artery through the site of the blockage. The device rotates at a speed of up to 1,70,000 rotations per minute, gently pulverizing the blockage into tiny particles that can pass safely through the bloodstream. This technique drilled and cracked a 99% critical, heavily calcified lesion in the left anterior descending artery of the left side of the heart, which was the only blood-supplying artery to both the left and right side of the heart muscle in this patient." explained Dr. Kushal Pujara, an interventional cardiologist. A heart team approach, involving cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and cardiac anesthesiologists, is essential in the management of such patients.
An 87-year-old man from Anand suffered a heart attack, had coronary angiography at another hospital in the city, and was advised for cardiac bypass surgery (CABG) due to critical calcified blockage. He also had impaired kidney function. The patient and family came to Bhanubhai and Madhuben Patel Cardiac Centre at Shree Krishna Hospital to get a second opinion from experts. He refused CABG in view of his advanced age, and it was decided to implant stents with a percutaneous complex coronary procedure under local anesthesia.
If stents are implanted without breaking calcium with this technique, then stents have the tendency to obstruct blood flow again with blockage, said Dr. Sunil Karna, another interventional cardiologist in the hospital.
Dr. Kushal Pujara added that ROTAPRO is a safe and sufficient technique for the endovascular treatment of heavily calcified coronary artery lesions. The hospital houses a state-of-the-art, high-tech Philips cath lab, and the heart team is available round the clock, which helps in performing such complex procedures successfully on patients.

Shree Krishna Hospital at Karamsad in Anand district has launched a unique scheme for patients with a view to providing comprehensive and personalized health care with commitment and compassion at an affordable cost. The hospital will entail patients a saving of Rs 500 daily on hospitalization charges in the general ward.
Under this scheme, in the general ward, there will be no charges for anything not connected with treatment. There will be no registration, doctor's consultation, or administrative and nursing charges. Bed and diet will be provided free. The patient will only have to bear the cost of medicines, investigations, and consumables connected with the treatment. The waving of charges effectively means that the patient has to pay for the services provided based on the orders of the doctors.
"This is being done to provide access to the best of health care at an affordable cost to all. The scheme is applicable to other than cashless and scheme patients," a release issued by the hospital said. "On July 26, our Foundation Day, two schemes for the economically underprivileged -the BPL families and those whose monthly income was less than Rs 10,000—the Jana Arogya scheme and the Arogyasree were introduced and are running successfully," the release further mentioned.
“Khilkhilat Ambulance” is used to drop the Mother and Child at their home after delivery. This facility was first started in Gujarat by former Chief Minister Shree Narendra Modi to reduce the mother and child mortality rate. Thousands of people come to Tertiary Care Level Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad, and this NABH-accredited hospital gives them the best treatment. Gujarat Government wants to achieve Millennium Development Goals 4th and 5th by reducing mother and child mortality rates. Shree Krishna Hospital cooperates with this vision and provides data from the pediatrics department to the government's health department. Considering this long-term cooperation of the hospital, Gujarat Government has given a “Khilkhilat Ambulance” facility to Shree Krishna Hospital.
Palliative care is an approach that helps patients and their families to cope with the illness. NABH-accredited Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad in the Anand district of Gujarat, has recently launched palliative care services. The services will be run jointly by the Departments of Anaesthesia, Community Medicine, and Extension Programmes and will be provided at the hospital between 9.30 am and 1.30 pm and home care services in the extension villages between 2.30 and 5 pm.
Anyone suffering from a life-limiting illness, such as cancer, stroke, neurological diseases, or late stages of heart, kidney, and respiratory diseases, needs palliative care. It is not meant only for terminal illnesses only. Palliative care is an approach that helps such patients and their families to cope with the illness. In addition to medical care, it involves several non-pharmacological interventions to provide relief from suffering. Along with helping with dressing wounds, and bed sores, maintaining personal hygiene, and helping with pipes for breathing, feeding, and pain relief, it also involves providing emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual support.
Dr. Dinesh Bhandari, Head, Community Medicine, said, “Palliative care can be sought at any stage of the life-threatening or life-limiting illness. However, the advantages will be maximum if it is sought early in the course of the disease rather than waiting for a later stage. This care is compatible with all types of current treatments. Good coordination between the current treatment provider and the palliative team, generally comprising a doctor, nurse, social worker, and counselor, will lead to better outcomes.”

In its pursuit of providing quality treatment at an affordable cost, Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad has launched the 160-bed Privilege Economy Wards from Monday, May 8.
Housed in the modern, newly built four-storied, spacious and airy DJS Get well Centre each floor will have two wards. Each ward will have 20 beds separated with partitions to ensure privacy and exclusivity. In its pursuit of providing quality treatment at an affordable cost, Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad In addition, each floor will have a doctor's room, procedure room, nursing station, and pantry Initially four wards spread over two floors with a bed capacity of 80, will be operational from Monday. In the next two months, the remaining 80 beds will become operative.
Increasingly, medical care, especially amongst the middle class is becoming unaffordable. The Privilege Economy wards are an attempt to make quality healthcare affordable for the section of society Ever since its inception, nearly four decades ago. SKH has been at the forefront of offering solace to suffering. Not a single patient has been turned away for lack of funds. Last year the Hospital treated more than 4 lakhs patients and nearly 40,000 patients.
The 720-bed NABH-accredited hospital has introduced a slew of measures to cater to every segment of society. At one end the Jana Arogya Yojana and the recently launched 450 free beds in Ashirwad wards cater to the underprivileged section, while at the other end is the Privilege Centre with personalized, luxury healthcare. The revenues earned at the Privilege Centre offset the deficit incurred in treating economically disadvantaged patients and allow the Hospital to reach out to even more patients like those in the Ashirwad Wards. The Privilege economy is the bridge between these two segments and fulfills a long-felt need for meeting the requirements of the middle class for quality treatment at affordable charges.
With the installation and commissioning of a new Linear Accelerator, the Manibhai Shivabhai Patel Cancer Centre of the Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad, became the only cancer centre in Gujarat to have two such machines in operation. Donated by Tata Trusts, this accelerator is capable of performing advanced techniques of radiation like 3D Conformal Radiotherapy, Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Volumetric Modulated Radiotherapy (VMAT), and Electron beam treatment.
A Computer Controlled linear accelerator customizes high-energy x-rays or electrons to conform to a tumor’s shape and destroys cancer cells while sparing surrounding normal tissue. It features several built-in safety measures of record and verification System (MOSAIQ) to ensure that it will not deliver a higher dose / under dose than prescribed and is routinely checked by a medical physicist / Radiation Safety Officer – to ensure it is working properly.
According to Dr. Rushi Panchal, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at the Centre, ‘This accelerator will share the load with the existing Elekta Synergy linear accelerator. As a result, it will help us to provide prompt and uninterrupted radiotherapy treatment to patients at the Centre.
The linear accelerator ensures the accuracy of dose placement without compromising the protection of critical structures. The accuracy of treatment planning with this technology will be of greater use while administering radiation for cancers in moving targets, e.g., cancer of the lungs, liver, etc. In addition to these benefits, this new form of treatment also takes lesser administration time, thereby relieving the patients of apprehensions and anxiety that set in prior to radiation. In short, a single dosage duration of 20 minutes is reduced to only 2-8 minutes per patient depending on the complexity of the treatment plan. It will also help to drop down the waiting period for radiotherapy treatment and enhance the number of patients on the treatment machines.’
The Centre was set up in 2004 and houses state-of-the-art cancer equipment in radiation, medical and surgical oncology and is dedicated to the delivery of compassionate and expert care to cancer patients. It also adheres to the motto of advancing its mandate of providing high-quality training in understanding, diagnosing, treating, palliating, preventing, and researching in the field of cancer. A dedicated and experienced team of full-time medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists ensure that all the patients receive treatment with care and compassion. They believe that while physical pain and cancer have to be treated, it is equally important to treat the spirit of the patient. Over 500 patients for cancer surgeries, 1500-2000 patients on radiation, and 2500-3000 patients with chemotherapy are treated every year. A bone marrow transplant Centre is now ready to cater to the needs of blood cancer patients.
Ever since its inception in 1981, Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad has always endeavored to provide quality treatment to all, especially the underprivileged in society. It is, therefore, no wonder that we were the first hospital chosen in the district to be empaneled under the Gujarat government’s Mukhyamantri Amrutam Yojana (MAA) in 2013 and MA Vatsalya Yojna subsequently. Families having an annual income up to Rs.1.5 lakh per annum can avail of cashless quality medical and surgical treatment for critical illnesses related to Cardiovascular diseases and Cancer under this scheme. Now the Hospital is also empaneled for renal and urology diseases.
Since then the 720-bed NABH-accredited Shree Krishna Hospital has treated 6500 cardiac and cancer patients under the MAA scheme making it the preferred hospital for critically ill patients of the region.
Out of the 112 empaneled hospitals under the Mukhyamantri Amrutum (MA) Yojana across the state of Gujarat, only four hospitals, including the Shree Krishna Hospital, are in Anand District. The Hospital, living up to its motto of Solace for the Suffering, has given a new lease of life to countless families through this program. An illness not only represents a permanent threat to their income and earning capacity, but in many cases, it results in the family falling into a trap of debt. Meant for lower-income group people and those living below the poverty line, the scheme has been a boon to many.
We at Shree Krishna Hospital follow the ideology of putting patient care first and their financial conditions later. Another step in this direction is the Ashirwad Wards facility.
Under this scheme, 450 beds out of 720 beds in the general ward of our hospital have been earmarked for free treatment. Ours is the first private hospital in the state to extend this facility.
In the Aashirwad wards, patients will be entitled to get free treatment without any discrimination. This is being done to provide access to the best health care at an affordable cost to all.
There will be no registration, doctor’s consultation, administrative, nursing, or operation charges. Bed and diet, ward procedures and laboratory investigations, sonography, and x-ray will be provided free of cost. The patient will only have to bear the cost of medicines and consumables connected with the treatment. All can avail of this offer except cashless and other scheme holders. Cardiac and Cancer patients are not covered.
Last year, we introduced two schemes for patients - Jan Aarogya and Aarogyashree, which are running successfully. The Jan Aarogya Yojana has been a boon to families whose monthly income is less than Rs 10,000. Now those under Jan Aarogya will get further benefits: a 10% rebate in medicine and 75% in CT scans and MRIs.
