The department practices a wide range of regional anesthesia techniques encompassing central neuraxial blocks like spinal, epidural, combined spinal epidural, and peripheral nerve blocks using nerve locater and/or ultrasonography which improves the quality of block, thus, minimizing the rate of complications. Perineural catheters are used for continuous anesthesia and post-operative analgesia. Recovery room facilities are available to observe and monitor the patients post-operation. The department runs a daily OPD for the assessment of patients pre-operation to stratify their risks and to optimize them thereafter.

Services for deep sedation and/or anesthesia with the required monitoring are provided to the Radiodiagnosis Department for CT Scan, MRI & USG for diagnostic and occasionally for interventional procedures. Similarly, anesthesia and sedation services are provided for cancer patients requiring procedures like interstitial brachytherapy and radiotherapy.

Pain clinic is conducted as daily OPD where primarily patients of chronic pain, cancer pain, and even acute pain are referred by various other specialties like General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Skin & Veneral Diseases, Medicine and Oncology, etc. Patients are treated using the multi-disciplinary approach with help from physiotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and neurophysicians. Drugs like injectable Morphine, Fentanyl lollipos–transdermal patch, Gabapentine, Pregabaline, and various combination drugs are available for the treatment of various types of pain. The Department also practices interventional procedures like neurolytic blocks, epidural steroid injections, etc.

Acute pain services are provided by the Department to post-operative, burn, and trauma patients in the hospital using continuous epidural, perineural, and patient-controlled analgesia catheters and multimodal drug therapy. Labor analgesia is also practiced in a protocolized manner on request by the Obstetrician in indicated cases and on demand by the Parturients. Various educational programs are conducted by the department for the nursing staff to increase awareness of pain as the fifth vital sign.

The Department is responsible for resuscitation calls, especially in polytrauma cases in the Trauma Centre, and providing anesthesia for emergency surgeries in the Trauma OT. The shifting and transport of critically ill patients in the ambulance is also entrusted to anaesthesiologists. The Department has played a major role in formulating the 'Code Blue' Team of the hospital which caters to any calls for resuscitation within the hospital campus.

The Department also manages the surgical ICU. All the ventilatory and hemodynamic monitoring and management is done using modern technology. Procedures like central venous cannulations using ultrasonography, arterial cannulations, percutaneous tracheostomies, and thoracic epidural catheter placement for fractured ribs or post-operation pain relief are performed routinely.

The Department has an adequate number of qualified and experienced faculty members. The department has run an MCI-recognised postgraduate program since 1998 with an intake of three degrees and six diploma seats every year. The postgraduate students are given wide exposure to all the surgical branches of anaesthesiology including cardiac, neurosurgery, plastic, urosurgery, pediatric, laparoscopic, vascular, psychosurgery, etc over and above the basic training in general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics & gynecology, and ENT.

Being a tobacco growing belt, the Charutar region has a high rate of tobacco consumption leading to an increased occurrence of oral cancer among the local populace. A high incidence of breast and cervical cancer among women of a certain age has also been recorded. To battle this worsening situation, the Manibhai Shivabhai Patel Cancer Centre was established in 2004 with generous contributions from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Manibhai Shivabhai brothers. It houses state-of-the-art cancer equipment in radiation, medical, and surgical oncology and is dedicated to the delivery of compassionate and expert care to cancer patients. It also adheres to the motto of advancing its mandate of providing high-quality training in understanding, diagnosing, treating, palliating, preventing, and researching in the field of cancer.

The Centre was inaugurated on 27th August 2004 by Shri Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons Limited. It boasts of full-time Medical Oncologist, Radiation Oncologist, Medical Physicists, and Radiation Technologists and also benefits from the services of visiting Medical and Surgical Oncologists.

Recently, the Centre added another feather to its cap by equipping itself with a second Linear Accelerator of a much higher capacity (the first of its kind in Asia) – a device used for external beam radiation treatments of cancer patients. The new machine with symmetry and intuitive features and an exceptionally high quality of radiation is all set to revolutionize the radiation therapy given to patients. It will generate a 4D (length, breadth, thickness, and density) mapping of the tumor region, followed by an estimation of its per second activity and position, and conclude by targeting and delivering radiation dose with sub-millimeter accuracy. This method greatly reduces the side effects of radiation therapy and aids the administration of a better quality radiation dose. Simply put, this method of radiation ensures lesser pain as only the cancerous tissue is irradiated and the non-affected part remains undamaged. Secondly, it ensures the accuracy of dose placement without compromising the protection of critical structures. The accuracy of treatment planning with this technology will be of greater use while administering radiation for cancers in moving targets, e.g., cancer of the lungs, prostate, etc. In addition to these benefits, this new form of treatment also takes less administration time, thereby relieving the patients of apprehensions and anxiety that set in before irradiation. In short, a single dosage duration of 20 minutes is reduced to only 2 minutes per patient.

The Department of Radio-diagnosis has three major X-ray machines with image intensifiers and screening tables. Besides, it also has six portable X-ray machines and a 100 MA X-ray arm with standing bucky. There are two CT scan units including a single-slice spiral CT simulation system. Two automatic processing machines together with an electric dryer for processing conventional and imaging films are also available.
